Cherished Friends, The soft morning bells of Santa Croce cathedral drift through my open window as I write to you from Florence, their gentle rhythm marking time in a city where the centuries blend together like watercolors on canvas. In these quiet moments, I find my soul standing ajar—exactly as Emily Dickinson described—welcoming the flood of sensations that come with being present in a place that has witnessed so much of humanity's beauty and struggle. As I explore the winding streets of Florence with Lexi, I'm struck by how my heart seems to exist in overlapping circles of connection. Here I am, surrounded by Renaissance masterpieces and medieval towers, yet also eagerly anticipating our upcoming "Love Letters" zoom gatherings with all of you. The distance between us seems to collapse when I consider how these separate worlds—the physical beauty of Tuscany and our virtual community of kindred spirits—both nourish the same hunger for meaning and beauty. I've been carrying a remarkable book throughout our travels titled Love 2.0: Finding Happiness and Health in Moments of Connection by Barbara L. Frederickson Ph.D. It explores how our moments of connection create what the author calls "upward spirals of flourishing." When we take time to contemplate and express the qualities we adore in others, we don't just brighten their day—we fundamentally alter the chemistry of both our bodies, creating cascading benefits for our health, creativity, and resilience. My first visit to Florence was in 1963, a young woman of 21 standing on the precipice of marriage, my mother by my side. The city was quieter then, less crowded with tourists, and the Italian men would call out "Bella!" as I passed. Now, decades later, they mostly gesture that I am in their way. I walk these same streets transformed. The crowds press in where once there was space, selfie sticks replace contemplative gazes, and yet—Florence herself remains steadfast in her beauty, a testament to the endurance of things that matter. The Painting That Still WeepsThere are moments that mark us, that shift something fundamental in our understanding of the world. For me, one such moment happened within the hushed halls of the Pitti Palace all those years ago. I stood before an enormous painting of Saint Peter—on his knees, tears streaming down his weathered face. "Saint Peter in Tears," the guide called it, explaining that Peter wept for all the suffering of mankind. I was spellbound. Something in his expression, the raw humanity captured by the artist's brush, reached through time and touched my young heart. Though I've never been able to find reference to this painting since, it lives within me—a reminder of how art can crack us open to deeper compassion. Isn't this what our "Love Letters" practice is about? Creating moments of genuine connection that might echo in someone's heart for decades to come? A few carefully chosen words of appreciation can be as transformative as a masterpiece hanging in a museum. A year and a half ago, I set an intention that still surprises some who know me well: to find a new place in the world and become what I lovingly call a "joyful Gypsy." This desire to wander, to keep my soul standing ajar even as the candles on my birthday cake multiply, feels like the most authentic expression of who I've always been. The adventure continues, each day adding new colors to this chapter of life. As I sip my morning espresso near the Duomo, watching the golden Tuscan light illuminate centuries-old facades, I wonder: How does your soul stand ajar today?
